White oil-impregnated PTFE tape (also known as thread seal tape or plumber's tape) is a common auxiliary sealing material used in piping installations. It is primarily manufactured from PTFE dispersion resin via paste extrusion and calendering, retaining a specific amount of lubricating oil or grease during the process. Based on its material composition and manufacturing method, its key characteristics are as follows:
1. Superior self-lubrication for easier installation
Unlike standard oil-free PTFE tapes, the oil-impregnated version possesses inherent, excellent lubricating properties due to the added lubricant. This effectively reduces friction and wear while sealing, making the tightening of pipe joints or the assembly of mechanical components smoother and less labor-intensive, while also helping to extend the equipment's service life.
2. Excellent flexibility and high strength
This tape offers outstanding flexibility, compressive resilience, and creep resistance. It features high longitudinal strength yet deforms easily in the transverse direction; it resists being cut by sharp threads during wrapping and conforms tightly to irregular thread profiles, ensuring an ideal sealing fit.
3. Exceptional chemical and temperature resistance
Inheriting the superior properties of PTFE, the white oil-impregnated tape is chemically inert to most substances, withstanding strong acids, strong alkalis, and various organic solvents. It also operates across a wide temperature range, remaining stable for long-term use in extreme environments from -250°C to +250°C.
4. Excellent surface conformity and non-stick properties
The tape is white, smooth, and uniform in texture, possessing the lowest surface tension of any solid material. It offers excellent conformity and adhesion to surfaces without sticking to other materials; this ensures a reliable seal while making future disassembly and maintenance convenient.
